Eagle Lake is a 4,700-acre oxbow formed by the Mississippi River and is cutoff from the river by the mainline levee system. Water levels are controlled via the Muddy Bayou control structure operated by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Eagle Lake is one of the largest oxbows in Mississippi and is a popular destination for bream and crappie anglers.
Species | Detail |
---|---|
Largemouth Bass | Bass fishing has been slow. Cooler morning temperatures should increase fish activity early in the morning. Top waters like buzz baits and hollow body frogs fished around the cypress trees near float row and buck chute can produce bites early in the morning. As temperatures rise target suspended fish near docks with crankbaits, chatter baits, and soft plastic (flukes) or hard body jerk baits. |
Crappie | Crappie fishing is fair. Anglers are targeting crappie in the deeper holes (20+ feet of water) south of the boat ramp. Soft plastic jigs as well as live minnows are excellent choices for bait. |
Bream | Bream fishing has been good. Try targeting bream in buck chute and the surrounding pad fields as well as the cypress trees near float row. Both crickets and red worms would be good baits. |
Catfish | Catfishing has been fair. Focus your efforts on deep water. Nightcrawlers, chicken livers, and cut bait all would be good choices for bait. |
White Bass | Try targeting white bass around piers with little Georges and small spinnerbaits. |
